What is an llms.txt file?
An llms.txt file is a plain Markdown file placed at the root of a website. It lists the site’s most important pages, to give a language model a curated map of the site at the moment it answers a question. Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI put the format forward in September 2024 as a proposal published at llmstxt.org.
The file contains no directives and cannot block or permit anything. An llms.txt file will not stop a crawler, prevent training on a site’s content, or restrict any AI system from reading a page. That makes it a different kind of file from robots.txt.

What does Google say about llms.txt?
Google's Search Central documentation on optimizing for generative AI features was updated 15 June 2026. It states that site owners need no new machine-readable files, AI text files, markup or Markdown to appear in Google Search. That includes its generative AI features. Google Search itself does not use them. The same page states that maintaining such files will neither harm nor help a site's visibility or rankings in Google Search.
Gary Illyes of Google spoke at the Search Central Deep Dive event in the Asia Pacific region on 23 July 2025. He said Google does not support llms.txt and is not planning to. Google's position has been stated in documentation and on the record, not inferred from testing.
Do ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Perplexity read a website's llms.txt file?
None of the major AI providers has publicly committed to reading a third-party llms.txt file or to using it as a retrieval or citation signal. OpenAI's own crawler documentation governs its bots through robots.txt and does not mention llms.txt.
Several AI companies publish an llms.txt file for their own developer documentation, which is a separate matter from their crawlers consuming other sites' files. A company publishing the file is not evidence that the company's crawler reads anyone else's.
How many llms.txt files actually get requested by anything?
Ahrefs reported in June 2026 that it analyzed 137,210 domains and found that 97 percent of the llms.txt files on those domains received zero requests during May 2026. Around 28 percent of the domains in that dataset had a valid llms.txt file at all.
Top Real Estate Systems has not independently verified the Ahrefs dataset and reports the figure as a vendor study rather than as a measurement of its own. The direction of the finding is consistent with Google's documented position that Google Search ignores the file.

Is there any situation where an llms.txt file is genuinely useful?
An llms.txt file has a real use on developer documentation sites. There, AI coding assistants are pointed at the file directly, so they find the right reference pages without wasting context. Google's Chrome team has also added an experimental llms.txt check to its agentic browsing audits, which concerns AI agents completing tasks on a site rather than search visibility.
A residential real estate agent's website is neither developer documentation nor a site agents transact on. For that site the file costs nothing and does nothing.
What should a real estate agent buy instead of an llms.txt package?
An agent who wants to be named in AI answers should spend on the things assistants demonstrably read. That means an accurate Google Business Profile, genuine reviews, pages that answer real client questions in plain language, and correct listings on the sites that name the agent. Google's own guidance is that ordinary search quality work is what makes a page eligible for its AI features.
